A student in my Intro. to Web Design class showed up wearing this T-shirt.
“Can you believe it was only $5 at a thrift store?”
Yes I can. But I wonder, what is this awesomely raw artifact — with it’s poor alignment, overly simplistic forms, and attempt at irony—really trying to tell us? “Graphic” design as an industry has shifted over the past 25+ years, demanding new roles and responsibilities that are often too slowly (and reluctantly) adopted by traditionalists and academics.
However, David Cabianca’s essay Graphic Design is Dead, Long Live Graphic Design celebrates the industry as an “outward looking”, culturally widening and maturing discipline. And I have to agree… although the industry’s interminable growing pains seems a constant, it’s ongoing metamorphosis only proves that graphic design is indeed, far from dead.
