enCode / deCode / reCode
Intro. to Interactive Media Workshop
Tuesday, July 20 — Wednesday, July 21
Prepared for the Higher Education Press (HEP) Beijing, China
Part Two: deCODE
Participants then “decode” the original experience for content, meaning, and history, and conceptualize an expressive typographic folding construction. The process of working through the CSS and XHTML mark-up language become a conceptual springboard as inspiration for the design.
This portion of the workshop is team-based and fast-paced—involving group brainstorming sessions, conceptual development, and the design of a folded book construction in two days.
01: Overview / Objectives
- use visual and structural metaphors to showcase relationships of CSS / XHTML in a “book.”
- create connections between design systems for web and design systems for print
- sensibility and sensitivity to typographic form and communication
- interactive paper protyping—for motion, sound, behaviors, and user manipulation.
02: Lecture Part Two: deCODE
Introductory lecture presenting student work showcasing book constructions that implement typography as a system, while reinforcing formal design principles for pixels and for paper. Students “decode” the original design piece for content, meaning, history, and conceptualize an expressive typographic book, using their code as the content for the design.
