Heather Shaw is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Curry College.
Prior to teaching at Curry, she was a full-time lecturer at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for both the Design and Digital Media departments. She has also taught at The Massachusetts College of Art and Design and the New England Institute of Art and Design.
Heather has lectured nationally and internationally on the integration of dynamic media with traditional graphic design pedagogy. Her most recent lecture: “enCODE / deCODE: What Die Neue Typographie (from 1928) can teach us about web design standards today” was presented at the “Imagine IT: Design for All” conference at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna, Italy 2008; and additionally at TypeCon Rhythm in Atlanta, GA 2009.
She was interviewed by Donald Beekman and Liza Enebeis for the podcast: “TypeRadio” at the Imagine IT conference in 2008. Her curriculum: Understanding Visual Narratives was recently published in “Teaching Motion Design: Course Offerings and Class Projects from the Leading Undergraduate and Graduate Programs” edited by Steven Heller and Michael Dooley. She co-chaired the National AIGA Design Education Conference: “Massaging Media 2: Graphic Design Education in the Age of Dynamic Media” held in Boston in 2007.
Heather earned her MFA from the Dynamic Media Institute at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and BFA in Visual Design from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. She has 15 years of professional experience working as a designer for print, motion and interactive media; and her clients have included Brandeis University, Perkins School for the Blind, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.
She currently serves as the Vice President for AIGA Boston, one of the largest AIGA chapters. AIGA is the oldest and largest design organization dedicated to the advancement of design as a professional craft.
